おそらく今年中または来年初めには新型コロナウイルスに対するワクチンがFDAによって少なくとも1つは緊急承認されるでしょう。しかし、全員に行き渡るには時間がかかり、これが2021年の半ばまたは後期と考えられています。
It is possible at least one of the vaccines could get emergency authorization from FDA, and we will have a vaccine that will be available by the end of this year, the beginning of next year. But it will not be available to everyone immediately, and the distribution of the vaccinations is likely not going to happen to the mid or end of 2021.
そもそもワクチンは何かについて説明します。
ワクチンは英語でVaccine (væksíːn)
ワクチンは特定の病気（ウイルスや細菌）に対する免疫を生み出す製品です。ある病気に免疫があるということは、免疫によってそのウイルスや細菌から守られていることを意味します。よって、病気になることなく病原体にさらされていることになります。ほとんどのワクチンは注射で投与されますが、一部は経口または経鼻で投与されるものもあります。
Vaccines are products that produce immunity to a specific disease. Being immune to a disease means you are protected against that disease. You can be exposed to virus without becoming sick. Most vaccines are given by injection, but some are given orally or nasally.
新型コロナの終息には集団免疫の達成が必要と考えられています。
集団免疫 (herd immunity)とは、免疫がある人が一定程度まで増えると、ウイルスは移動することができなくなり、感染がやがて終息することを意味します。
When most of a population is immune to an infectious disease, this provides indirect protection to those who are not immune to the disease.
例えば、人口の80％が免疫があるということは、5人のうち4人は感染している人に遭遇しても病気になりません。よってそれ以上ウイルスが拡散することはありません。
集団免疫に人口の何割の免疫が必要かはウイルスの感染力に依存します。新型コロナの場合、60−70％が必要と言われています。
For example, if 80% of a population is immune to a virus, four out of every five people who encounter someone with the disease will not get sick. They won't spread the virus any further, and the spread of diseases is kept under control. Percentage of a population to achieve herd immunity depends on how contagious an infection is. Stopping COVID-19 is considered to require at least 60-70% of the population to be immune.
