Inflation is a increase in the prices of goods and services in an economy.
For example, something that could previously be purchased for 10,000 yen will no longer be able to be purchased due to price increases, resulting in a decrease in the value of the currency.
This results in a loss of purchasing power.
Reasons for the price increases include the resumption of economic activity and increased global demand for energy as a result of the spread of the new corona vaccine, as well as Russia's invasion of Ukraine, which has spurred a tight (overwhelmed) supply chain.
To curb inflation, the Federal Reserve Board, the U.S. central bank, is raising interest rates. As interest rates move up, the burden(cost) of borrowing becomes more expensive. As a result, people will not spend money and demand will decrease. If demand falls, prices will also fall. On the other hand, the Bank of Japan continues to maintain a low interest rate policy.
This has opened up the the percentage difference in the interest rates of two countries' currencies and the movement to buy dollars with high interest rates and sell yen has spread in the foreign exchange market.
